Alex Eala Embraces Home Crowd as Philippines Hosts First WTA 125 Tournament

MANILA, Philippines — Filipino tennis star Alex Eala is welcoming what she calls a major advantage as the Philippines prepares to host its first-ever Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 125 tournament at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Eala, currently ranked 49th in the world, said playing in front of a home crowd gives her added motivation rather than pressure, as the Philippine Women’s Open begins next week in Manila.
“Of course it’s an advantage,” Eala said during a press conference on Saturday. “Playing at home is special because of the crowd and the people who support you.”
The Filipina athlete has drawn strong fan support during international tournaments, including her recent main-draw appearance at the Australian Open, where Filipino fans lined up early, filled nearby viewing areas, and repeatedly chanted her name during matches.
According to Eala, the growing fan presence reflects increasing local interest in tennis.
“It’s amazing to see this community rally behind me,” she said. “This support has helped lead to milestones like a home tournament for Filipinas.”
The Philippine Women’s Open marks the country’s first WTA 125 event, a significant step for professional women’s tennis in the Philippines. Eala described the tournament as “surreal,” noting how far the idea once felt from becoming reality.
“I’m grateful and still in disbelief that this is happening,” she said. “Being able to compete at home and spend time with my family makes it even more meaningful.”
Eala also encouraged fans attending the tournament to support players respectfully and take in the rare opportunity to watch high-level tennis live.
“This doesn’t happen often here,” she said. “Being mindful and respectful while enjoying the experience is important.”
Seeded second in the tournament, Eala is set to face Russia’s Alina Charaeva in the opening round.
Other Filipino players competing in the main draw include Kaye Emana, Tennielle Madis, and Elizabeth Abarquez, while Stefi Aludo remains in contention after advancing in the qualifiers.
The tournament is expected to draw both local and international attention as Philippine tennis reaches a historic milestone.
